Photography evaluation
I have found this project slightly frustrating as I don't feel I have had the opportunity to obtain photographs I can be really proud of, I find that I have had to make the best of what I could get. There are plenty of reasons for me to blame this on - the time of year and the weather - what a rubbish time to have a photography project, everything is so wet and dull! The short duration of the project - I know Niall has said this is a an easy project but there has been so much to be done in such a short time. My circumstances have meant that I have had a very unexciting life over the last four weeks so I haven't managed to get anywhere more visually stimulating to me e.g. up a hill or to a beach. I haven't even managed to get to Edinburgh. And my subject of choice would normally be landscape.
However, I have gone round all the time with my photography head on and have taken around 250 photos to play with.
My final four used a variety of zoom and macro lens, the tripod and handheld, auto focus and manual focus, flash and no flash. I was challenged by the birds at the feeder. I struggled with the light as it was darkish light anyway (it was darkish every day I tried to photograph the birds) and I would normally have a shorter shutter speed as they didn't stay still very long. I tried increasing the exposure while using photoshop express afterwards however in the end I let the camera do it itself and it decided it needed the flash.
I found the macro setting harder with this camera than my previous manual camera. With my last camera I needed to line marks up for a sharp focus, whereas with my Nikon it just looks sort of in focus. I had similar problems focussing on the birds as I had to focus on the feeder rather than the birds (as the birds weren't there when I was focussing).
I have employed significant cropping with the birds and the rose to make the subject a major part of the photo. The leaf was more straightforward as it has bright light behind it (I do like light effects in my photos). I felt I had to try quite hard to get the birds and rose look like anything worth looking at.
I still find the Nikon DSLR quite complicated to use. The point and press modes are absolutely fine and I get a lot of nice photos generally, however it taxes my brain remembering everything about ISO, aperture and shutter speed. But I try to use these settings - I know I just have to keep on altering the settings until I get the look I want.
I altered my photos using photoshop express as I find that easier than photoshop for that purpose, however I used photoshop to make my photo compilations and to alter the colours of the rose.
Regarding my power point I feel guilty as I have made the simplest one possible. I only learned how to make power points last year however that is not really the reason. I find some power points too fancy for their own good with the backgrounds, boxes, text zooming in etc. If my photos are any good they should be able to stand on their own two feet and presented simply will be fine for them.
All in all, I tried, but I am only quite happy with the results.
