Portraits of my family
With these etchings I have tried to capture expression and humour to give them more life. I have made the portraits interact with each other to emphasise that we are a family and not four individuals. With one group of four, I have left more ink on the plate to give more of a chiaroscuro look, with the other group I have wiped the plate fairly clean to give more of a line drawing. These prints have been affectionately titled “Who’s farted?”

Life Drawings

These are two life drawing sketches done over a 30 minute period each. The first uses the medium of ink and the second uses the medium of acrylic paint.

Pizza Family Emblem

This is the end result from my developmental drawing and ceramics modules where the theme was botanical. I brought the personal theme into this module to increase my motivation as I prefer to work on pieces that mean something to me. Within this piece I have used the slab, modelling and imprinting techniques of building and have used a variety of glazes for decoration.

Still Life

This is an observational drawing which challenged both my understanding of values and how they seem to change depending on what value they are next to, and my appreciation of positioning and negative spaces.

Fabric Monoprints

With acrylic paints and fabric medium I made a series of monoprints using the gelli plate. With the results I experimented by making a variety of cushion covers – one crazy patchwork using scraps of hand printed fabric, another featuring a central panel and the third combining hand printed fabrics with solids.

Wallhanging

I created a monoprint on fabric using a gelli plate and leaves from the garden. I used the contrast between light and dark values with highlights in gold to give the final piece the aura of a tropical sea in the moonlight. I finished the piece with some hand stitching to further emphasise the calmness of the scene.

Leaf

Within the photography module I further explored the botanical theme and the extremes of values caused by sunlight and shadow. Making it black and white reduced the distraction of the colour to produce a stronger image.

20th Century Kiss 1

This painting was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss although I looked to represent the society where we now live where men and women are equal, and as such, an embrace is balanced and equal. I have tried to express a feeling of love and romance through this painting. It is a portrait of my husband and me.

Although submitted for the painting module, this painting uses mixed media. The sea is mock silver leaf which lifts the light in the painting. The background is done in a mixture of acrylic paints and modelling paints, whereas the figures are done in oil paint. The palette is muted to emphasise the serenity of the scene.

20th Century Kiss 2

Using the same composition as 20th Century Kiss 1 I have used a mixed media approach based around the theme stitch. I have explored techniques both new and old to me to essentially create what is a huge sampler. I have used the colour scheme to make it more cohesive.

Illustration

With this picture I have combined hand drawing with digital art to produce an image which is eye catching and has movement. I have also used this opportunity to practice drawing hands, another challenge I set myself this year.

Self Portrait
This is a monoprint self portrait in a style inspired by Frank Auerbach. It was done very quickly, less than a minute, with fluid spontaneous movements. This is one of a series where I found my ability to capture likeness improved with practice!

My Lockdown

Within this oil painting I have used colours, light values and a self portrait to express the feelings associated with being in lockdown while grieving. I have taken inspiration from post impressionist artists and fauvists.
